  题目1:On Opening Psychological Courses

  Paper Two 试卷二

University students are at the age when they are aware of their academic interests and able to make many decisions on their own.In light of this fact,it is reasonable that they should be given the freedom to make optional courses both within and outside their major area of study.Nevertheless, the central importance of core or requisite courses cannot be understated, and students should be careful not to spread themselves too thin.

Part I Translation (30 minutes, 20 points, 10 for each section)

教育资讯,      By the time students have finished high school, they have often narrowed their academic interests.Upon entering university, for example,a student might decide to major in English, psychology or economics. However, students are likely to have other interests outside the scope of their field of major. Allowing them to take non-major courses will offer two important benefits.First,it will engender a more meaningful academic experience. Second,it will cultivate students who are well-rounded and bring a variety of skills into the workplace upon graduation. For these reasons, university students should be given the opportunity, and even encouraged,to take courses outside their major.

  On Opening Psychological Courses

  Section A

In addition to taking noncompulsory courses outside of their major, university students are also generally allowed to take elective courses within,or relevent to,their academic major. An undergraduate student majoring in economics, for instance, would, would typically be required to take core courses such as microeconomics, macroeconomics and economitrics, among others.Courses such as industrial economics, environmental economics and labor economics, however, may be offered on an optional basis. This allows students to develop an area of spcialuzation within their their major that can better prepare them for emplyment or graduate studies.

Many universities and colleges have now decided to open more psychological courses to their students. This is totally advisable and has been warmly welcomed。

From the foregoing discussion,it is evident that optional courses offer students a variety of benefits. However,it would be a disservice to students if universities allowed them to take too many optional courses, especially ones outside of their academic major. If an engineering major graduated having completed a variety of coursework in socioligy and anthropology but only two or three engineering courses,it is unlikely that he would have attained enough expertise in his field to be well-trained professionally or to qualify for postgraduate work. It is critical that students avoid becoming a "jack of all trades and a master of none".

In the first place psychological courses are in urgent need in colleges and universities. Today students are under tremendous pressures. They have economical and academic pressures and pressures coming from interpersonal relations as well. These pressures may bring them anxiety, depression, and despair. Some students even committed suicide for these pressures. The psychological courses may teach them how to deal with pressures. And thus can be very good for the students’ mental health. In the second place such courses may help students deal with problems in the future. And therefore beneficial to the whole society. The courses teach students how to regulated feelings and emotions in different situations which can be of great use when they graduate and go to work。

One of the chief concerns of wildlife management is the protection and improvement of the nature habitat so that animals have enough food and water to survive. Wildlife management involves care of the soil to produce good vegetation; it also involves care of plants, not only as a source of food, but also as protection. Animals need cover to hide from their natural enemies and to raise their young safely.

In my opinion, students should be encouraged to pursue their unique and potentially diverse academic interests. To this end, optional courses are an essential part of higher interests. To this end, optional courses are an essential part of higher education. However, too many optional courses would thwart students'ability to develop a single main area of expertise, with detrimental consequences to their future carees.

As for me, I think it’s a wise idea to open more psychological courses to the students。

Just as crops are harvested wildlife too must sometimes be “harvested”. By allowing limited hunting, good management can control certain species that threaten to overpopulate their habitat.

  题目2:Work In the Countryside

  Section B

Directions: Translate the following passage into English. Write your translation on the ANSWER SHEET.

  Work In the Countryside

Many university graduates now volunteer to work in the countryside. It is reported that once hundreds of university graduates competed with one another to work as a village leader in Beijing. Many factors have contributed to this phenomenon. First, with more and more university students graduating each year, the job market competition becomes increasingly fierce and many graduates can not find jobs in the cities. Working in the countryside is better than being jobless. Second, the villages that are trying to employ university graduates are generally in the rich area of the country which makes working there an attractive choice. Third, some university graduates being from the countryside are eager to go back home to contribute to construction their hometown with their knowledge and enthusiasm. They will play important role in building the new countryside。

Personally, I think university graduates should go to work where they are needed most and where they can make full use of their talents. Working in the countryside can be truly an advisable choice。

Part II Writing (30 minutes, 15 points)

题目3:How Long Should the National Holiday Be?

Directions: In this part you are to write a composition of no less than 150 words about “College Graduates Work as Village Officials”. You should write according to the outline given below.

Some college graduates choose to work as village officials:

How Long Should the National Holiday Be?

1.Do you think it is a good idea?

It goes without saying that some people prefer long vacations because they can have enough time to do things that cannot be finished within a short time. During a long vacation, they may make a complicated experiment, carry out an involved investigation or go to a faraway place for some necessary field work. Taking a full time job to earn money for one or two months is another benefit the long vacation provides and sometimes a good academic thesis with a considerable length needs a long vacation.

2.What can they offer the countryside?

What is more, those who favor short vacations also have understandable reasons. For two or three weeks’ rest is adequate for students to refresh themselves without forgetting the lessons that are to be continued next semester. Short vacations also mean to rest three times a school year and short semesters. To study in this way is easier than to study for a long exhausting time with many courses and lessons crammed together。

3.What can they gain from their village positions?

As has been noted, either long or short vacation has its advantages and disadvantages. What matters is how to make use of it。

  题目4:The Safety of Food

  Paper Two

  Part I Translation

  The Safety of Food

  Section A

Reports of food poisonings or tainted food have been frequent in China. In late 2006, illegal amount of chemicals was discovered in turbot. In March 2007, KFC was accused of adding oil filtering power. In September 2008, a fresh outbreak of kidney disease occurred, due to baby formula contaminated by melamine, a poisonous chemical。

These incidents happened so frequently mainly because the government failed to inspect efficiently. Though there are around ten national government departments and numerous provincial and local agencies that share the responsibility to ensure food safety and monitor local food production and sales, their duties are often overlapping and ambiguous, which makes the monitoring system unresponsive。

In my opinion, to guarantee the food safety, the government should attach great importance to food inspection and improve the supervision mechanism. They should check the food products in the market, and immediately pull those disqualified products off shelves. In this way, Chinese food will conform to the standard and thus become safer and safer。

  Section B

  题目5:Global Shortage of Fresh Water

With the development of the society, man’s demand for water has been constantly increasing, but the water resource available for human is sharply decreasing. The deterioration of ecosystem brought about by the water crisis threatens human’s existence seriously.

How to make use of the water resource effectively and promote the sustained development and protection of water resource has become an urgent problem which should be faced together by all the countries in the world.

  Global Shortage of Fresh Water

  Part II Writing

Many people believe that fresh water will never be used up. They think that fresh water comes from such varieties of sources that it is always sufficient for us. Such opinion leads to surprising waste of water。

College Graduates Work as Village Officials

As a matter of fact, the earth is short of fresh water. Furthermore, with the rapid growth of the world’s population, the rising demand of water by industry, and the serious pollution of our surroundings, the world is facing the danger of running out of fresh water. Actually, in some big cities, fresh water cannot meet the daily needs。

With the development of the society and the constant increase of job-hunting pressure, many people find it hard to find a job, especially the college graduates. Most of them just want to work in the big and developed cities, such as Shenzhen, Shanghai, etc. But the situation has changed. Some college graduates prefer to work as village officials in the rural areas. I think it is a good idea.

Therefore, it is up to us to find new ways to save water. First, we should make the best use of water, and not waste it. Second, scientists must work even harder to purify seawater, polluted water and try to find solutions in industry to reduce the use of fresh water。

First, it not only can ease the job-hunting pressure in the big cities, but also can make the college graduates have more job chances. Second, the college graduates can bring the advanced science and technology to the lagging rural areas. For example, they can teach the villagers how to feed the pigs effectively and plant the fruits and vegetables scientifically, which can help the villagers live a wealthy life in a short time. Third, the college graduates can exercise themselves in the poor living condition. They can know much more about Chinese farmers, and they may have a better and larger platform to display their talents and abilities.

In a word, I am in favor of this idea, and I wish I could be a village official after graduation.
